A Passion for Pushing Limits
“I tell my kids to do hard things. Now it’s my turn to show them.” These words set the tone for Joe’s journey – a journey not just of athleticism but of resilience, community, and inspiration. Joe, a natural competitor who grew up loving sports like basketball, baseball, swimming, and martial arts, embodies the ethos of Active Green Pro. His life has always revolved around the pursuit of excellence, whether training relentlessly or challenging himself to overcome obstacles.

Overcoming Challenges and Finding Purpose
Joe’s passion for martial arts was curtailed early on due to family concerns, but his determination led him to find his own way to the gym, riding the bus 45 minutes each way to train. His dream was to become a professional fighter until an unexpected diagnosis of hepatitis C brought everything to a halt. Although later proven to be a false positive, the experience shifted Joe’s focus. It became a turning point that redirected his energy towards fitness, wellness, and helping others.
Over the next 14 years, Joe built Fight Fitness, got married, had kids, and became an integral part of his community. When the pandemic hit and a beloved member, Steve Osborne, passed away at just 50 years old, Joe’s perspective deepened. It was a reminder that life is fleeting and should be lived fully. Inspired by this loss, Joe set his sights on a new challenge – completing an Ironman triathlon.

Training for the Ultimate Test
Signing up for Ironman Ottawa was no small feat. A 3.8-kilometer swim, a 180-kilometer bike ride, and a 42.2-kilometer run demand peak physical and mental performance. Joe dedicated 15 to 20 hours weekly to training, balancing swimming, bike, running, strength work, and, crucially, nutrition. His days weren’t without struggles – exhaustion, illness, and moments of impatience – but every challenge was another lesson in perseverance.
Joe’s training philosophy mirrors his advice to his children: practice the way you play. He trains in open water because that’s what race day will demand. His approach to nutrition is rooted in whole foods, minimal processing, and respect for the body’s needs – a value that aligns perfectly with Active Green Pro’s mission to fuel lives naturally and effectively.

Beyond the Finish Line
For Joe, the Ironman wasn’t just a race. It was a tribute – to his community, his family, his kids, and to friends like Steve. It was a way to teach by example, to show that setting big goals and seeing them through is possible at any age. As he crossed the finish line, the victory wasn’t a medal but a message: “Trust the process.”
